What is 95kPa?

IATA regulations stipulate that packaging with liquid retention as its basic function must be able to withstand an internal pressure difference of not less than 95kPa without leakage.

Why are 95kPa containers required when transporting UN3373 Class B biological material?

It is assumed that the substance is likely to be sent by air freight. IATA regulations require that the internal pressure difference that the packaging (secondary) withstands is not less than 95kPa. During transport at high altitudes, samples may leak, or worse, the bag may rupture when the air pressure changes significantly! When samples are potentially infectious, it is critical to protect postal workers, laboratory workers and other critical workers who may handle packages. It also raised concerns that it could contaminate other samples.

What is a 95kPa specimen transport bag?

The secondary packaging and transport bags have been tested and comply with the requirements for the transport of primary containers containing UN3373 biohazardous substances. In some cases (for Class B biological substances) the bag must include an absorbent pad. If the main container is compromised, the pad will collect the leak. The absorbent also acts as a second layer of protection against leaks. Sample leakage can lead to contamination and potential infection. The bag must also have room for the information accompanying the sample being transported and be clearly labeled.

95kPa bags provide an extra layer of protection against biohazards or potential hazards in the primary container. It can withstand air pressure changes during air travel. When to use 95kPa air bag

There are several situations where this package is needed. One of these is to meet the P650 Packaging Directive for Air Transport (IATA). IATA stipulates that a primary or secondary vessel must be explicitly tested to withstand a pressure differential of 95kPa. Therefore, leak-proof containers that fail the 95kPa differential pressure test can only be used for sample transport in conjunction with secondary containers that pass the appropriate test.

95kPa bags must also be used when the inner packaging or sample container does not comply with 95kPa or the pressure capability of the primary container is unknown.
